Summary: | The project is about the design and development of an intercomputer radio communicator (IRC). The IRC is a microprocessor-based communications controller which allows several computers to communicate with each other using radio waves as transmission medium. Using radios as the communication medium will allow applications such as mobile and inter-island computer communications. The hardware for the IRC includes a personal computer, the IRC unit, and the VHF radio. The PC is connected to the IRC unit using the asynchronous serial communications adaptor. The IRC unit in turn is interfaced to the VHF radio. The VHF radio acts as the transmission medium for the IRC. The general idea is for the computer to send a file to the IRC unit. The IRC unit in turn will transfer the file to another computer using the VHF radio as the transmission medium. An application program handles the transmission and reception of files to and from the IRC unit. A system software is stored in the IRC unit to perform the physical and data link layer functions of the OSI Reference Model. |
