Screening for Molluscicidal activity of Capsicum frutescens and Solanum melongena

The alcoholic leaf and aquaeous fruit extracts of Capsicum frutescens and Solanum meloggena, both from the Solanaceae family, were tested for molluscicidal activity using Pomacea conalicuta. Only the fruit of C.frutescens exhibited activity although its potency was quite weak with 50% mortality observed at 4,400-4, 750 ppm. Comparison with the commercial molluscicide metaldehyde, for which 50% mortality was measured at 23 ppm revealed that the use of aqueous C. frutescens fruit extracts is not as commercially practicable.
