Summary: | The purpose of the study was to determine the perceived social identity and roles of charitable nonprofit organization founders in the Philippines. By answering this, their personal, behavioral and environmental factors were considered in the context of the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT). A qualitative thematic analysis was conducted through the use of interviews via the convenience sampling method and was employed to eight charitable NPO founders across Metro Manila. The new data was individually themed by each of the researchers, then was tallied and categorized into their frequency types through a cross-case analysis. The results were divided into the three factors of the SCT, and aimed to answer how charitable NPO founders perceive their social identity and role, the relationship between these perceptions and their environment, and the relationship between these perceptions and their behavior. Results reveal that founders view themselves as passionate, resourceful, and equal individuals, who perceived a spiritual calling, are part of a larger community, and are unorthodox. The environmental factors which influenced their present circumstance include their experiences from childhood, from an accident, from a previous experience with volunteering, and from a period of low socioeconomic status, while their behavior comprises of giving back to the community and pursuing justice for its members. These two factors both influence and are reinforced by the founder's personal factors. |
