Summary: | Distillery slops, a high strength industrial liquid waste, is a dark brownish-black liquid produced as a by-product in the alcoholic fermentation of molasses. It is one of the most difficult wastes to dispose of because of its high biological oxygen demand (BOD) content and extremely dark appearance. This study applies the anaerobic upflow filter to the distillery slops obtained from Central Azucarera de Don Pedro. Furthermore, this study proposes the use of different filter media and different loading rates in the treatment of distillery slops. The effluents were collected and analyzed for BOD, COD, TS and TSS reduction and the gases generated were measured and analyzed for methane content. The treatment efficiency is evaluated from the pollution load reduction and biogas production of the distillery slops. |
