Summary: | The physico-chemical properties of water and soil were monitored in a semi-intensive fish pond in Sta. Elena, Hagonoy, Bulacan from November of 1991 to March of 1992. The objective was to correlate water and soil quality with the growth of fish stocks in the entirety of the culture season from the time of pond preparation, stocking, growing and until harvest.Three water samples were collected at each time interval of 10.00 am, 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm from the two study sites mainly Pond 1 and Pond 2. Each water sample was subjected to different physico-chemical properties of water such as dissolved oxygen, total alkalinity, salinity, pH, nitrate and phosphate concentrations, temperature, visibility and mean depth. The values of the three water samples were calculated and means obtained. Analysis of soil samples by soil composition, soil nutrients and texture were also done by collecting soil samples from the topsoil of Pond 1 and Pond 2. The mean length (cm) and mean weight (gm) of the fishstocks were also measured every sampling period. Likewise, management or productivity data of fishponds were obtained through interview with the controller and owner of the fishponds. |
