Summary:The study involved determination of the effects of partial substitution of Pinatubo sand on the strength of normal weight concrete. The percentages of substitution used during the experiment were 25 percent, 50 percent, and 75 percent of the ordinary sand's proportion. Ordinary mixture and 100 percent substitution were also conducted but only as a basis of comparison because previous research has already taken that up (Li and company, 1993). All the mixtures were tested as to their compressive and tensile strengths.Pinatubo sand from Mt. Pinatubo's eruption on June 12 to 16, 1991 was also subjected to tests/analysis to determine their chemical and physical properties. The physical properties tested were the grain size distribution, fineness modulus, specific gravity, and absorption. The findings of the group is that Pinatubo sand has positive applications as substitute to ordinary sand on normal weight concrete. The concrete using Pinatubo sand was found to be strong in compression but weak in tension.
