Self-disclosure of adolescents with their parents

The primary objective of this study is to know the content of self-disclosure of adolescents with their parents, as well as the differences of content between the eldest, the middle, and the youngest. This study is descriptive in nature and random sampling design was applied. Hundred Forty Eight (148) adolescents were chosen. Later on, the number was reduced to thirty (30) through Fish-bowl technique to avoid familiarity of the researchers. Then an interview guide was constructed for the interviews of the thirty remaining respondents. Their responses were then categorized into five (5) areas family, financial, academics, social relationships and boy/girl relations and were classified as the content of self-disclosure of adolescents. Major findings were gathered in three major parts. In the eldest group, they have problems of being the second head of the family. People around them expect a lot which accounted for the difficulties in the family aspect. For the middle adolescent, they are well-adjusted, yet experience feelings of insecurity and inadequacy. For the last borns, the results show that they have less worries since they have less demands from parents. Adolescents usually disclose to their fathers because they feel that they would listen to their children's points of view and they are the head of the family. Emotional problems are usually to the mothers because she is the source of affection and sympathy in the home.
