Summary:The improved Fluidized Bed Bioreactor was used in this study to determine its effectiveness in treating industrial wastewater in a continuous process. Effects of variations in gas flowrates and seeded and unseeded wastewater was considered in this study. Effectiveness of the reactor is based on three important parameters: percent reduction in BOD, percent reduction in COD, and amount of suspended solids. The change of some physical properties of wastewater such as color and odor were observed as well as daily monitoring of pH.Utilization of 60 ml polyurethane materials, 5000 mL/min gas flowrate and seeded wastewater at a 39 hour retention time gave a 60.94 percent COD reduction and 75.88 percent BOD reduction for batch operation. The continuous process utilizing 60 ml of polyurethane material, 5000 mL/min gas flowrate, seeded wastewater and an influent flowrate of 10 mL/min at a 115 hour run gave a 52.25 percent COD reduction and 59.8 percent BOD reduction.
