Summary: | Wastewater coming from paint manufacturing plants contain harmful substances or compounds such as metals, dissolved and suspended solids and organic matter which are dangerous to land and water lives. This study used chemical methods of coagulation and flocculation in reducing the dissolved and suspended solids, turbidity and other parameters of the paint wastewater coming from Dutch Boy Phil. Inc.The study involved the testing of different types of polymers. The codes of the polymers that were used are the following: M1011, 5NPW108, N7751, and N7110. The first two polymers were anionic while the latter, were cationic in nature. Aside from the polymers, alum, lime and bentonite clay were also used as coagulating agents. The wastewater treatment was done using three stages of coagulation and flocculation. After the last stage of treatment, the following parameters were determined: turbidity, pH, total suspended solids, total solid content, total dissolved solids, and Biochemical Oxygen Demand.Among the polymers, 5NPW 108 was found to be the most effective in the reduction of turbidity having a percentage reduction of 99.98. For total suspended matter, N7110 was the most efficient with 82.86 reduction. In addition, N7751 has the highest reduction in terms of total solid content and BOD having 78.86 and 50.05 reduction respectively. However, among the polymers used, M1011 functions in an average level for all the parameters. Most of the parameters tested during the primary treatment meet the DENR standard however total suspended solid and BOD fail to pass the standard, thus, the wastewater can be treated further using secondary treatment. As compared with the existing treatment process of Dutch Boy, the result conducted by the group shows a significant difference in total solid content. Also, the process employed by the group has less steps involved as compared to the present wastewater treatment of Dutch Boy Phils. Inc. In addition, bentonite clay functions as effectively as the activated carbon used by Dutch |
