Description
Summary:A survey to determine the methods of general waste disposal in some hospitals in Metro Manila was conducted from October 1991 to December 1992. Results showed that majority of the hospitals surveyed use noncolor-coded plastic bags in storing their wastes. Disposal of their general wastes as well as their hazardous wastes are done through the following methods: Municipal disposal, open dump and burning. Most hospital management interviewed in the study showed interest in improving present collection and disposal which is to be in a more regular basis as part of their scheme. Among the alternatives proposed by the respondents are: improvements in communication and water supply cooperation of the hospital owners in a given municipality proper allocation of budget for toxic and hazardous wastes and installation of incinerator for secondary hospitals. Other measures for handling wastes include color-coded plastic bags, drums, waste cans and cartons. Lastly, due to financial problems, hospitals and clinics have very limited or no amount of budget for waste disposal.
