Summary: | The Product Planning and Development Strategy Support System (PRODEGY) is an example of the latest thrust in information systems. Strategy Support Systems (SSS). This latest innovation in information systems allows strategy analysis based upon multiple, interrelated dimensions without oversimplifying strategic issues. Previous systems have instead generated periodic reports based upon a few (typically two) dimensions such as sales and cost, sales and time, or price and cost, keeping other critical areas constant. Thus, Strategy Support Systems considers not only a few but several of the dimensions affecting a specific marketplace which will allow management to review all the possible courses of action and its probable results, how the different dimensions affect one another, and how to maximize each dimension for the best overall result. Fundamentally, systems such as PRODEGY are designed to support the planning activities of an organization by assisting management in determining effective strategy which combines elements of both subjectivity and objectivity for the particular field of application. The capability of putting together management's judgement on which strategy to adopt (subjectivity) with a Strategy Support System's analysis and output (objectivity) allows the organization to examine all the possibilities or courses of action and effectively make the strategic decision. PRODEGY was developed to be an effective Strategy Support System for a fast-food organization---CHOWKING, specifically to support top management by facilitating the decision making and strategy formulation process with regards to product planning and development. Its main functions, thus, include: Product Development, Product Line Analysis, Forecasting, and Value-chain Analysis using different analysis techniques, mathematical models, and decision making processes. In so doing, present a thorough analysis of the data at hand and giving CHOWKING management time opportunity to make important decisions and effectively plan strategy in as quick and effective a manner as possible. |
