The importance of family: The effects of family relationships on the recreational substance use of the university student

This study explores individuals who engage in recreational substance use, their thoughts on their family relationships, and what those relationships have on their substance use. Three types of family relationships are examined: parent-parent, parent-child, and sibling-sibling. Homogenous purposive sampling was utilized gathering ten Filipino university students who are currently involved in recreational substance use. Narrative given were gathered through an interview proper and were analyzed using thematic analysis. The implications of the research show the need for both improving family relations and understanding what the causes for substance use stem from. Findings suggested that negative effects of family relationships have a role in the individual use of recreational substance use.
