Feminization of Oreochromis niloticus by oral administration and quick-dip method using diethystilbestrol
Diethylstilbestrol (DES), a synthetic estrogen, was used to feminize Oreochromis niloticus fry. In the oral administration method, four groups were formed with (1) Group A, fed with 1000 mg DES per kg feed for the first five days of the 15-day experimental period, (2) Group B, fed with same concentr...

Control group was given normal feed for 15 days.In the quick-dip method, fry were dipped for one hour in a concentration of 4 mg DES per liter of water. Group I was dipped on the 3rd day of 15-day experimental period. Group II was dipped on the 8th day of 15-day experimental period and Group III was dipped on the 13th day of 15-day experimental period. Control group was given normal feed during the 15-day experimental period. The treatment that obtained the highest mean percentage of feminization in the oral administration method was Group A (72.01 percent) followed by Group B (51.51 percent), the Group C (40.81 percent). The percentage of the quick-dip method for Group I was 9.62 percent, Group II, 7.82 percent and for Group III, 5.27 percent. Base on the results obtained, oral administration was more effective in feminizing undifferentiated Oreochromis niloticus, specifically at the first five days of the 15-day experimental period. However, percent survival was slightly higher in the quick-dip method. 1993-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_bachelors/9312 Bachelor's Theses English Animo Repository Tilapia Diethylstilbestrol Fish-culture Fishes-- Sexing xx2 Estrogen Biology |
