Summary: | The study focused on the behavior of vehicular traffic flow that is subjected to stopping and/or parked vehicles along a road segment. For this study, the road being assessed was a portion of Taft Avenue (northbound lane) in front of the De La Salle University. Data gathering was done through video-taking from a high-rise building. For the video analysis, the road network was divided into lengths of 20 meters, in which different vehicles were observed per lane. The final obtained results were tabulated, and graphed to assess the effect of parked and stopping vehicles on vehicular flow.
The purpose of the study was to assess the behavior of each vehicle in the road network, and to see if stopping and/or parked vehicles play a big role in the occurrence of traffic congestion. From the data results, different behaviours of the flow of vehicles were observed. The data gathered further showed a smooth flow of vehicles at the inner lanes, specifically, the second and third lanes, since the vehicles that travel at the innermost lanes are the cars that have a faster average speed than that of the velocity of vehicle at the outermost lanes. The main reasons for the slow vehicular flow were caused by the changing of lanes, and by stopping, waiting, and parked vehicles attracted to the different establlishments located in the vicinity, the latter being the bigger issue. Parked cars are blocking the outermost lane, resulting into a dead lane, and the four-lane road became a three-lane road. There are also times wherein two of the lanes would be blocked on the part of the road fronting the well-known establishments. |
