Description
Summary:This study investigates the effectiveness of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Introductory Workshop and three techniques in enhancing self-actualization of Indian major seminarians through one session treatment. The three techniques used are the 1) Unconscious Reframing, 2) New Behavior Generator, and 3) Global Unconscious Reframing. An initial survey was done with an administration of the California Test of Personality (CTP), Gordon Personal Profile (GPP), and Inventory of Self-Actualizing Characteristics (ISAC). These instruments were given to 42 randomly selected seminarians of the Christ Hall Seminary, Karumathur, South India. The instruments obtained the levels of their sense of belonging, self-esteem, and self-actualization.The test results of CTP and GPP indicated that the seminarians were above average in their sense of belonging and self-esteem. Six clients who were below average in their perception of self-actualizing characteristics were selected for treatment. Their ages ranged from 19 to 29 years. The case study or the N=1 design was employed. By draw lots, two clients were selected for each of the treatments. Process measures included 1) a recall on the post-session interview and 2) oral reports on the positive and negative events. The oral reports were audio-taped immediately after the intervention. Subjective measures including the rating scale, oral and written reports of the clients, and a personal interview with the client's significant others. The Inventory of Self-Actualizing Characteristics (ISAC) was again administered for an objective measure. The ISAC was administered before the treatment, 10 days, one month, and two months after the treatment of the last pair of clients. The effectiveness of the treatments using Unconscious Reframing, New Behavior Generator, and Global Unconscious Reframing of NLP techniques was judged by the difference between the pre- and posttest results of the ISAC. Ten days after the intervention, all the clients who in the pretest had earlier scored below the midpoint, considerably gained higher scores. This signified that all clients experienced an enhancement of the self. The increased was sustained two months after the intervention. The results showed that the clients who were subjected to the three different treatments manifested positive changes in their behavioral and emotional functioning. From the ISAC outcomes, it was indicated that all the three NLP techniques were effective in bringing changes and enhancement in the self-actualization of the seminarians. Among the three, the Global Unconscious Reframing appeared to have given the best results.
