There were eighteen (18) activities included in the three-unit laboratory manual of the General Botany course syllabus. The laboratory activities were content validated by three Biology experts. The laboratory manual, on the other hand, was evaluated by five Biology teachers in terms of its objectives, content and organization/approach and style, adaptability, and questions. The readability of the laboratory manual was evaluated using Feed-back readability formula by Talisayon (1983). There were seven laboratory activities found to have unclear words and unclear group of words. However, such unclear words and unclear groups of words had computed communication indices interpreted as clear based on the communication index scale. The laboratory manual was tried-out and evaluated by forty-three (43) freshman students of Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Chemistry, and Bachelor of Science in Home Technology of the University of Southern Mindanao, Kabacan, North Cotabato. The try-out class was conducted from August to October, firs semester of school year 2000-2001. Pretests and posttests were conducted before and after the discussion of each chapter to find the effectiveness of the field-base laboratory activities. Biology experts found the content of the field-base laboratory manual as valid. In like manner, the Biology teachers found the objectives, content and organization, language / approach and style, adaptability, and questions of the laboratory activities as highly favorable. The over-all results of the Communication Index (C.I.) affirmed that the series of laboratory activities were written clearly and precisely. The students' evaluation of the introduction, objectives, materials and apparatus, procedures / activities, and evaluation (questions) showed a favorable and highly favorable result. The results of the posttests were significantly higher than those of the pretests. For Unit I, twenty-two students or fifty-one percent (51 percent) of the try-out class gained significantly higher scores. In like manner, twenty-six students or sixty percent (60 percent) and thirty-five students or eighty-one percent (81 percent) gained significantly higher scores in Units II and III, respectively. The eighteen laboratory activities included in the laboratory manual in General Botany were found valid in terms of content by Biology experts and Biology teachers. Likewise, they were written in clear and appropriate manner as it was affirmed by the results of readability indices. The forty-three (43) freshman students of Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Chemistry, Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Bachelor of Science in Home Technology of the University of Southern Mindanao, Kabacan, Cotabato rated the laboratory manual as highly favorable and favorable as to its introduction, objectives, materials and apparatus, procedure / activities, and evaluation. Majority of the students found the field-base laboratory manual effective as affirmed by their significant gain in scores in the posttest. 2001-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_doctoral/885 Dissertations English Animo Repository Botany--Study and teaching Teaching--Aids and devices Science--Study and teaching Educational technology Curriculum enrichment Curriculum planning Botany
