The study investigates the possibility of cognitive acceleration through a thinking science program in general biology among the college freshmen of the University of Southern Mindanao and to determine whether the program can enhance the achievement of the sampled biology students. The study used Quasi-Experimental non-equivalent control group pre-test and posttest design. A total of 131 regular freshmen students enrolled in general biology at the University of Southern Mindanao at the Institute of Development Economics and Management taking up BS Agribusiness and BS Agricultural Economics - 85 in the experimental and 46 in the control group during the first semester of School Year 2001-2002 - was involved. The experimental group was exposed to the intervention program every other week for 18 weeks, while the control group was taught in the traditional method for the same length of time. Statistical tools used were the ANCOVA, t-test, and stepwise regression analysis. Findings show that the level of cognition of the regular college freshmen of the University of Southern Mindanao had an increase in their level of cognition as follows: early concrete 8 percent, concrete 46 percent, early formal 45 percent and formal 1 percent. There was a significant change in the cognitive level of the experimental group compared with the control group after the intervention. 2002-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_doctoral/893 Dissertations English Animo Repository Science--Study and teaching Biology-- tudy and teaching College freshmen Universities and colleges Curriculum enrichment Cognition-- Testing Cognitive Abilities Test Science and Mathematics Education
