This study is an attempt to measure the effects in academic performance of the Summer Science Institute (SSI) Programs in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Science I for secondary school science teachers within the service areas of the Mindanao State University Science Training Center in its capacity as a Regional Science Teaching Center (RSTC). Secondary level science teachers participated in the Summer Science Institute (SSI) held at Mindanao State University from 1980 to 1985 were used as subjects of this study. Improvements on the academic performance of these teachers from SSI were measured by their pretest and posttest scores. Correlation between some demographic variables such as chronological age, units earned in science prior to their teaching, science teaching experience, major and minor subjects and the type of school taught and their academic performance in science subjects was also sought. Evaluation was done to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the programs as perceived by the teacher participants in terms of the SSI philosophy, the teaching methods, the science content, the staff of the institute and planning of activities. The study showed that there was significant gain in the mean score obtained by participants in physics, chemistry and science I, except in biology. Those participants who attended the Summer Science Institute in the different subjects for the summers of 1985 obtained residual gain scores either equal or greater than the mean residual gain score for each summer session. Moreover, there is significant correlation between units earned in science and posttest scores of all the participants major subject and the posttest scores of Science I and chemistry teacher participants types of school and posttest score of biology teachers and teaching experience in science and the posttest score of physics and biology teachers. The participants to the 1983 chemistry SSI and those participants to the 1985 SSI in science I, biology and physics generally felt that they have received above average training during the Summer Science Institute as revealed by their responses to the evaluation questionnaire. 1987-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_doctoral/1214 Dissertations English Animo Repository Science--Study and teaching (Secondary) Summer schools Academic achievement Mindanao State University Science Training Center (Philippines) Chemistry
