Summary: | This study on the history of Chinese-Filipino literature is undertaken to find out its dominant themes and to trace the development of Chinese literature written by Chinese-Filipino writers from 1988 (the year when the first Chinese daily newspaper was published in the Philippines) to 1987. This study hopes to achieve two objectives -- to enrich the field of research in Philippine literary history and to help promote understanding between the Filipinos and the Chinese in this country. Chinese-Filipino literature is undeniably a part of Philippine literature just as Philippine literature in Spanish is recognized a part of the Filipino literary heritage. Because of the lack of English translations of Chinese works and systematic research in this area, however Chinese-Filipino literature has been overlooked in most Philippine literature textbooks. In this study, the researcher analyzed 529 works, including short stories, poems, plays, and essays chosen according to their themes and the periods to which they belong. Among these literary works, 5 short stories, 1 essay, 2 plays, and 30 poems are translated into English as an anthology of this study. |
