Description
Summary:Escherichia coli isolates from Philippine General Hospital diarrhea cases of children less than two years of age, found to belong to serotypes associated with enteropathogenicity, were tested for enterotoxin production. Using the the ligated ileal loop technique of De and Chatterje (1953), 12 of the 16 isolates were found to cause dilatation of loops of rat small intestine--positive reactions. The effects of E. coli enterotoxin on the small intestine, as well as the biochemical relation between E. coli enterotoxin and cyclic AMP, are discussed.
