Loss of limb: Factors of adjustment of males who have lost a limb in the absence of formal rehabilitation

The study used a non-experimental exploratory design. A case study approach with multi-source using in-depth-interview was used to gather information on the stages of adjustment, changes brought about by disability and the factors influential in adjustment. A qualitative method by content analysis and cross-cases analysis was done on the data gathered from the interviews. A non-probability sampling design, purposive sampling was used in selecting the respondents. The respondents in the study are 3 males with disabilities due to trauma incurred at the age range 27-38 years old and had their disability at least one year from the time of the study. All respondents have adjusted accordingly to their conditions and have not undergone any formal psychological rehabilitation rehabilitation or extensive counseling of any sort. Based on the data gathered, there are 3 stages of adjustment: (1) Reaction to the Disability, (2) Assessing the Reaction of Family and Significant others to the Disability, and (3) Acceptance of the Disability. With each stage, there were several changes experienced by each respondent and different influential factors.
