Life review process of the frail elderly Filipinos from a selected institution

This study aims to identify the salient themes in the life reviews of the frail institutionalized elderly and its possible consequences. Nine respondents from the Lualhati ng Maynila were chosen to serve as the respondents for this study. Before and after conducting the life review, three scales were administered so as to determine the level of anxiety, depression and life satisfaction of the respondents. Three judges coded the transcribed life accounts of these respondents. The negative themes, which were identified from the life reviews, maybe categorized as loss of a loved one, resentment, financial problems, longing for affection and regret. On the other hand, positive themes were categorized as gratifying experiences and fulfillment. Based on this study, a significant difference in the one of the scales used, the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SRDS) was detected. This manifests the possible interventionary purpose of the life review process.
