| Summary: | This paper looks at the impact of elderly presence on households demand for transport in the Philippines. Ageing in developing countries have yet to reach the immediate attention of the public, however, statistics exhibit increasing elderly population throughout the years. Among the ordeals of ageing is physical weakness that could render elderly people dependent on their family especially on activities that require them to travel. Filipinos are known for strong familial bonds not only within the immediate members but also extends to include grandparents. Households demand for transport was therefore modeled along with socio-economic and demographic variables. To empirically fulfill the objectives of this study, Ordinary Least Squares method was applied to generate regressions on a per region basis and for the entire Philippines. Regional regression results provided insignificant values on the majority with regards to the variable on elderly presence. Conversely, results generated from regressing the data on the entire Philippines, the variable on elderly presence vis-Ã -vis other choice variables were highly significant. |
