Summary: | In the recent years, there has been rapid global industrial development and remarkable economic growth, resulting to an increasing population and a better quality life. However, these developments have led to a significant increase in waste generation, including wastewater. Improper disposal of wastewater leads to the degradation of water bodies, endangering marine life and posing health hazards to the nearby communities. As such, sustainable development should be promoted through the use of wastewater treatment facilities. Optimizing these facilities improve treatment capabilities, encourage more investments for treatment, and reduce harmful environmental impacts. By introducing a non-linear programming wastewater treatment plant that has a systematic view of the facility, the treatment process can be optimized. The proposed model considers various factors, including different input types in terms of quality and quantity, various output of disposal options, a multi-criterion and multi-period perspective, and a dynamic treatment process. This study also introduces the use of different input treatment methodologies-- mixed, parallel, and series-- to better optimize the system objectives. The proposed model is validated through the use of real data from Manila Water Company. A comprehensive scenario analysis with five different settings is also conducted to show the capabilities of the model and the significance of the contributions made by this study. |
