Filipino adaptation and validation of the direct assessment of functional status (DAFS): A performance based measure of activities of daily living and quality of life changes in dementia

The original English version of the Direct Assessment of Functional Status (DAFS) scale was adapted into Filipino by a committee of experts and lay panel. Equivalence between the two versions was ascertained using a performance criterion where the original and adapted versions were administered to normal, bilingual older adults. The Filipino DAFS was administered to three comparison groups namely normal elderly controls, dementia and other ADL impaired groups due to other causes such as depression, stroke, sensorimotor difficulties, psychiatric disturbances. Results of one-way ANOVA reveal significant difference among groups. Further statistical analyses suggest that dementia patients manifest considerable impairment across different functional domains relative to normal or other groups. It also correlated significantly with the Filipino ADCS-ADL inventory (Pearson r = 0.91). Internal consistency was high to very high, with alpha coefficients ranging from .77 to .96. Filipino DAFS also has very high interrater reliability. The present study provides evidence that the Filipino DAFS is a reliable and valid test
