Representation and visualization of basket constructs

An approach to representing and visualizing basket constructs in 3D is presented. The few past researches that have been done on basket constructs are concerned only with the 2D (planar) representations and visualizations of their patterns. The few past researches that have been done on basket constructs are concerned only with the 2D (planar) representations and visualizations of their patterns. Most of other previous works that are closest to the representation and visualization of basket constructs have been on knitted and woven textiles. Difficulties that were encountered in this research lie in considering the strip overlaps in a basket construct, as well as the patterns, shapes and bends that these constructs may produce. As with previous work done on textile and garments, a study on basket constructs and their possible computer representation and visualization schemes is significant in the realistic representations of real-world baskets. This research explores both symmetry and braid theory as approaches to basket construct representation. Due to inherent limitations of symmetry, braid theory was found to be more applicable and appropriate. These representations are then represented as data structures in a prototype program and visualized in 3D. Issues encountered in the implementation of the representation and visualization schemes, as well as how these were addressed are discussed.
