This study presents the implementation of a bandwidth utilization scheme in an Ethernet LAN. The focus of the study is the effect of a bandwidth intensive application such as video in congesting a LAN and be able to come up with a solution to control the utilization leading to less packet losses and latency. There are two approaches considered in the study the use of classless and classfull scheduling algorithms and buffer tuning strategy. Scheduling algorithms are implemented using the traffic control function of the Linux kernel. Buffer tuning strategy using Dynamic Sizing of the buffer is considered to minimize packet losses and latency during times of congestion. Since the main transport protocol used in a TCP/IP environment is the Transmission Control Protocol, the project focuses on the TCP layer in the Linux environment. A kernel level approach implemented in a Linux box served as the main equipment prototype used to realize the study. The results showed that scheduling algorithms have limitations in controlling congestion in band limited link. Dynamic buffer strategy proves a better alternative in maximizing the utilization of the link and minimizing packet losses and latency experienced by the network service such as video over http. 2007-01-01T08:00:00Z text application/pdf https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_masteral/3510 https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/context/etd_masteral/article/10348/viewcontent/CDTG004300_P.pdf Master's Theses English Animo Repository Ethernet (Local area network system) Computer networks Data transmission systems.
