Description
Summary:An exploratory study was undertaken to look into the concept of marital success and its indicators for Catholic Ilocano couples in Abra. The subjects of this were 11 couples from the Catholic renewal movement Couples for Christ between the ages of 26 65 and had been married between 3 23 years. The qualitative data was collected in two phases. The first phase consisted of Focus Group discussions conducted separately for husbands and wives. The second phase consisted of in-depth interviews with three couples, who their fellow couples selected for their exemplary marital lives. The results revealed that Ilocano husbands and wives do not differ in their marital concept and its indicators. They defined marital success as characterized by understanding and love, permanence, happiness, stability, children and their success. The significant indicators of marital success which were not reported or emphasized significantly in earlier studies, but are very unique to Ilocano couples were the following: children and their future success, strong family ties, and a sense of sacrifice or thriftiness. iv
