This term paper contains the Strategic Management Plan for Century Canning Corporation (CCC). To attain the proposed corporate objectives, the strategic plan was formulated using various frameworks as tools to devise the recommended competitive strategies on the basis of Threats and Opportunities to the industry, the Strengths and Weaknesses of the company as well as the Personal Values of the Key Implementers and the Broader Societal Expectations. CCC is into canned tuna processing and in terms of addressing market needs, the company belongs to the Food Processing Industry. The industry is comprised of enterprises engaged in the preservation, packaging, and marketing of food products for the consumer market. The Philippine food processing industry is classified into crop-based, livestock-based and aquatic-based sub-sectors and is further sub-divided into various categories as many as the varieties of products consumed in the market. The company is specifically categorized under the Fish and Marine food processing subsector. Food processing remains the Philippines' most dominant primary industry accounting for 40.1 percent of total output in manufacturing. The gross added value is more than $2.0 billion with an annual increase estimated at 8-10 percent. The Philippine Bureau of Food and Drugs Statistical Report of Establishments for 2004 lists a total of 11,601 food processing establishments nationwide. Most of the companies are owned by a single proprietor that are common among micro, cottage and small industries and a few large multi-product firms, some of which operate in partnership or as a subsidiary of foreign or multinational companies. The industry contributes approximately 20 percent of GDP per annum. Using Porter's Five Forces Model, the paper provides an analysis of the Company's task environment by examining the competitive forces affecting the industry. As discussed in this paper, the task environment of the Food Processing Industry is currently characterized as follows: (a) intensity of rivalry among existing competitors is high (b) bargaining power of customers is high (c) threat of substitutes is high (d) threat to entry in the domestic front is low but high for foreign imports and (e) bargaining power of suppliers is low.
