Students' perception of teacher traits and the relationship between professional competence and human relations skills of the high school teachers of Notre Dame of Surala, South Cotabato

The main problem of this study is to determine which traits high school students perceived in their teachers that help them facilitate their learning. It further attempts to find out if there is a relationship between professional competence and human relations skills of teachers, and also if there is a relationship between teacher behavior and students academic performance ratings in the fourth year. Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions: 1) What is the perception of the students regarding teacher behavior? 2) What is the rating and rank of each individual teacher in the perceived traits along the six categories: professional competence, ability to motivate, ability to discipline, fairness, innovation, and personal qualities? 3) What is the general profile of the teacher behavior of the teachers of Notre Dame of Surala? 4) Is there a relationship between teachers professional competence and their human relations skills? 5) Is there a correlation between teacher behavior and academic performance ratings of the fourth year students? The research is based on the responses to a survey-questionnaire administered to 537 students of Notre Dame of Surala high school for the school year 1977-1978, with each student rating eight teachers and a total of 28 teachers being rated. A questionnaire is constructed, consisting of 45 questions. These are grouped according to categories of teacher traits, namely, professional competence, motivation, discipline, fairness, innovation, and personal qualities. The rating of the teacher traits used the 5-point rating scale. Then, the mean rating for each teacher is computed separately on three bases: by item, by category, and by the total teacher behavior. The obtained means are used to rank the teachers and to determine their areas of strong points and weak points. On the other hand, to test the hypotheses advanced in this study, the Spearman Rank-Order Correlation Coefficient (rho) is used. To determine the level of significance of the rho obtained, the computed values are compared with given norms. An interpretation analysis is then made from the computations. The data gathered, after they had been tallied, ranked, and tested, showed the following: 1) The high school students perceived their teachers as possessing to a varying degree traits that are helpful in the teaching and learning process. 2) The general mean rating of all the teachers included in the survey was 3.659 which was almost similar to 3.655, the midpoint of the scale labeled very good. 3) There were 17 teachers whose mean ratings lie above the midpoint of the range labeled very good, and 11 teachers below it. 4) Twenty six teachers mean ratings lie within the range labeled very good, while two teachers mean ratings were within the range of good. 5) There is a high correlation and marked relationship between the professional competence and human relations skills of the first and second year teachers at the .01 level. 6) There is a low correlation between professional competence and human relations skills of the third year teachers. There is no significant relationship between the two traits. 7) There is a moderate correlation between professional competence and human relations skills of the fourth year teachers. There is no significant relationship between the two traits. 8) There was no relationship between teacher behavior and academic performance ratings of the students of the fourth year.
