Summary: | The golf course maintenance industry is not a glamorous industry in the sense that profits are generally not that high. The prestige and love for the game and nature are the motivating factors why a businessman will enter the industry. Financial backing is also essential in doing business.
Within a company, profits increase only through cost saving measures. Contract pracies generally don't change over the contract period.
The trend these days is for golf clubs to outsource their maintenance operations for two reasons. First, is the rising labor issues brought about by regularization and formation of unions. Secondly, the highly technical field of turf management makes it difficult for clubs to find a very competent Golf Course Superintendent.
When outsourcing, labor issues are borne by the contractor, which usually hire its employees on a project basis. This means that once a project is terminated, their services are terminated too without questions. And to address the technical part, contractors usually hire expatriates as consultants only so as to spread their costs among various projects. With contractors having several projects, the pool of local Golf Course Superintendent makes problem solving easier and faster.
The research was conducted based on actual experience since the researcher is a Golf Course Superintendent. Annual reports of the company were used to analyze the financial aspect. To further strengthen and validate the research, interviews were conducted with the key officers of the company.
This paper focuses on recommending strategies that will improve the systems and processes within the company and subsequently profitability. |
