Specifically, this study has the objectives of 1) identifying the structural organization of the Introductions in terms of moves and steps, and 2) identifying the use of linguistic features such as hedging devices and verbs that are commonly used in the Introduction section of Maritime Research Articles (MRAs). To achieve this, thirty (30) MRAs from the maritime field were examined on a per-sentence level. The moves and steps were then summarized to reveal the most dominant move and step, as well as the most common hedging device and tense of verb used in the Introduction section of MRAs. These MRAs were analyzed by using Swales and Feak (2004) framework for the moves and steps, Martin-Martin (2008) for the analysis of hedging devices, and Quirk, Greenbaum, Leech, & Svartvik (1985) for the analysis of tenses of verb. This study contributes to the understanding of the maritime field in writing RAs and to raise rhetoric consciousness of maritime writers as they engage with their audience appropriately. Also, the Filipino maritime researchers and maritime teachers can make use of the findings of the study to present various ways in writing a better thesis paper, research paper, or any academic paper. 2014-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_masteral/4640 Master's Theses English Animo Repository |
