Description
Summary:Pneumonia, particularly in the Philippines, remains one of the leading causes of death among all age groups, including the elderly. This study was carried out to identify factors that are significantly associated with pneumonia experience among the elderly. 60 purposive sampled elderly persons were interviewed in Davao Oriental. Results of this study showed that among the variables explored which include socio-demographic characteristics, lifestyles, presence of household pollutants, knowledge level of pneumonia, and type of treatment practices, only financial resources were found to be significantly related with the elderlys pneumonia experience in the past 12 months. Specifically, the elderly who are more likely to have pneumonia were those who had non-income financial resources. The role that financial resources play in elderlys health should then be considered in designing and implementation of programs seeking to improve the well-being of the Filipino elderly.
