Future orientation as a moderator between perfectionism and suicide ideation

Suicide has become a major health and social issue among individuals all around the globe. It has been the second major cause of death for both males and females of all races aged 15-24 as reported by the national statistics in the U.S and the World Health Organization (WHO), while the ninth leading cause of death among Filipinos aged 20-24. According to a research done by Arria, OGrady, Caldeira, Vincent, Wilcox, & Wish (2009), attempted and completed suicides were said to be possibly predicted by the suicide ideation of a person. Many factors have been correlated to suicide and suicide ideation; one of which is perfectionism. It is the high standards a person set for him/herself. As a person puts increasing pressure to meet his/her high standards, s/he will be met by an intense need to perform better and avoid failure. This, in turn, affects his/her suicide ideation. This paper intended to find out if the relationship between perfectionism and suicide ideation will be lessened when an individual see his/her future as changeable that s/he can do something about what is waiting ahead of him/her; and this factor is called future orientation. Results indicated that Future Orientation significantly moderated the relationship of perfectionism, specifically self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism, and suicide ideation; while age and gender were both not significant in the moderation of future orientation between the predictor and response variables.
