Summary: | The municipality of La Trinidad is the largest producer of Strawberry in the country wherein it is one of its economic drivers. Strawberry production is dependable to climatic conditions and very sensitive to natural hazards like flooding. The study focuses on creating a flood risk based analysis to come up with agricultural losses estimation. The study specifically focuses to attain the following objectives: to identify flood hazard level of the area considering different rainfall and flood data to determine impact of flooding in terms of damage and loss of agricultural crops and the disruption of supply due to different events.
The result of different flood models shows that overflowing of the irrigation ditches will cause the flooding of the farmlands, flow depths will reach up to 0.50 meters a depth which will be submerging the agricultural crops and will be causing crop damages and losses.
Agricultural crop damage estimation focused on these parameters flood date, return period, crop type and crop pricing. Parameters are modified based on local crop pattern and pricing. Crop damages reaches as high as Php 1063307.25 and disrupted strawberry fruits reaches 13.57% of the expected harvest for strawberry. Expected annual damages presented is Php 66496.48 if there will be no structure built to eliminate the flooding is part of the hydroeconomics. The study has found that flood timing and return period are important parameters affecting crop losses. The results indicated that agricultural farmland is more vulnerable to flood resulting to high crop damages during harvesting stages of crop. |
