| Summary: | Barbed Wire: A Contextual Study of Poems by Four Political Prisoners in the Philippines sheds light on the poems included in the anthologies Why Cage Pigeons? by Mila Aguilar, Moon’s Face and Other Poems by Alan Jazmines, Alab: Mga Tula by Edgar Maranan, and Prison and Beyond by Jose Maria Sison. The lives of these poets have been discussed, and their poems have been categorized according to their themes. The six main classifications are A Barbed-Wire Existence, The Guiding Light, The Detained Society, The Detained Society’s Response; The Poet, the Pen, and Imprisonment; and The Triumph of Battered Lives. The personal and socio-historical contexts of these poems are provided through the interviews which were conducted with the four writers and through library research. |
