Isolation, structure elucidation and antimicrobial properties of secondary metabolities from the leaves of Blumea balsamifera Linn. and Pithecolobium Dulce (Roxb.) Benth
Ethyl acetate extract of powdered dried Blumea balsamifera Linn. (Sambong) leaves afforded β-carotene (BB3), icthyothereol acetate (BB4), lutein (BB9), and cryptomeridiol (BB12). The dichloromethane extract of air dried leaves of Pithecolobium dulce (Roxb.) Benth. yielded β-carotene (PD1), mixture o...

Summary: | Ethyl acetate extract of powdered dried Blumea balsamifera Linn. (Sambong) leaves afforded β-carotene (BB3), icthyothereol acetate (BB4), lutein (BB9), and cryptomeridiol (BB12). The dichloromethane extract of air dried leaves of Pithecolobium dulce (Roxb.) Benth. yielded β-carotene (PD1), mixture of polyprenols (PD3), betuladecaprenol and betulaundecaprenol; lutein (PD4) and spinasterol (PD6). The structures of BB4 and BB12 were elucidated by extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, while those of BB3/PD1, BB9/PD4, PD3 and PD6 were identified by comparison with literature. Antimicrobial tests indicated that BB4 has moderate activity against the fungi Aspergillus niger, Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Candida albicans. The isolate BB12 indicated low activity against these fungi. Both compounds expressed no activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, and Escherichia coli. |
