The study aims to discover whether the SRA reading laboratories can be effective tools of instruction for fifth graders in a certain Philippine provincial school, notwithstanding the pupils' second-language handicap. By dividing the total fifth grade population into three groups according to their initial reading ability, high, average or low, the study seeks further to determine whether the SRA claim will hold true in this setting, namely, that average and slow students show nearly equal developmental gains through use of the laboratories.
