Description
Summary:Ocean monitoring plays a vital role in both fisheries and aquaculture sector. There is a need to measure various parameters in different locations at a regular interval of time. In-situ devices come into play and data communication and transfer of data is important. Monitoring devices for underwater studies can send/receive data either via acoustic or electromagnetic (EM) wave propagation. However, radio frequency underwater is prone to electromagnetic interference (EMI) and has a limited range in seawater. On other technology, cabled communication using fiber optic is expensive. To be able to communicate underwater in a higher bandwidth, underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) is a promising solution. However, high attenuation of light underwater inhibits it to be fully used in the field. Proper modeling of the communication medium will help to extend the optical communication range and hit a lower bit error rate (BER). This study investigated the Mie scattering and absorption coefficients of coastal waters in the marine protected area of barangay Lo-ong, Concepcion, Iloilo using a low-cost 532nm light emitting diode (LED) and photodiode. The study showed that 532nm light emitting diode (LED) and photodiodes can be used to measure scattering coefficients of coastal seawater. However, when used to measure total attenuation coefficients of coastal seawater, these need further electronic designs studies. Lambertian distribution of 532nm LED light intensity is greatly affected by the seawater medium as shown in Monte Carlo Simulation. In addition, 532nm LED light intensity is underestimated using Beer-Lambert’s Law which does not consider light scattering as shown in the simulation.
