Description
Summary:Along with the impact of globalization and the emerging new technologies, companies must manage change by perceiving it as an opportunity to be able to sustain, grow and compete in a rapidly changing environment and respond to change with innovation (Dogan, 2017). Established in January 2007, Sinawal Medical Supplies is a young, but a competitive trade player in the healthcare industry. It was formed with the primary purpose of establishing a sales and marketing arm and becoming the leading distributor of high-quality implants and instruments used in orthopedic surgery. Belonging to a very dynamic industry, Sinawal seeks to transform and improve their business processes to address the ever-changing needs of the customers. The main problem for this empirical study is “Does innovation and employee engagement affect the sustainable entrepreneurship of Sinawal Medical Supplies? Specifically, “How do the innovation variables (awareness, strategy and policy, implementation, capital investment, human resources, and capacity building) influence sustainable entrepreneurship?” and “How does employee engagement (cognitive, emotional, and behavioral) affect the strength of the relationship between innovation and sustainable entrepreneurship?” A mixed-method research design was used for this study. All 70 individuals employed under Sinawal Medical Supplies was included in the gathering of data. The study used Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) as its statistical treatment of data with the help of a statistical software; SmartPLS. Content analysis of the individual interviews was done subsequently. The results showed that among all 6 factors of innovation, only human resources positively influence the entire components of sustainable entrepreneurship. However, results showed that capital investment positively influences economic sustainability, and implementation positively influences social sustainability. This study also confirms that employee engagement does not moderate or affect the strength of the relationship between innovation and the three components of sustainable entrepreneurship altogether. Also, the study found that employee engagement moderates the relationship between human resources and one particular component of sustainable entrepreneurship— environmental sustainability. Nevertheless, employee engagement should not be totally discredited. The researcher found that employee engagement has a direct effect and significantly influences the entire components of sustainable entrepreneurship. The researcher first recommended that the company should address the inconsistent views per category between the bottom and top-line employees, which can be found in chapter 5, table 13. Second, the company should invest in its human resources to be sustainable because the study found that human resources positively influence economic, social and environmental sustainability. Third, the researcher suggested for the company to consider the factors of innovation that influence social sustainability. Apart from human resources, implementation efforts positively influence social sustainability. Fourth, the company should also stabilize its capital investment strategies. Fifth, employee engagement should not only be encouraged in innovation practices but must be applied in the business processes of the company as a whole. The researcher recommended that the company refers to the literature consolidated in this study that tackle the importance, benefits, and techniques to keep employee engagement levels high within the firm.
