Description
Summary:Biotechnology is science-driven, ambiguous, risky, highly innovative, and ethically, socially, and politically charged. This complex and incredibly fast-moving field has forged a new future for nearly every aspect of modern life, from the food humans eat to the way they approach diseases, clean the environment, and defend countries from terrorism. Concomitantly, biotechnology is profoundly affecting business, education, and legal-political priorities. Today, it is inconceivable to think of a college graduate or business leader who does not have some fluency in the language of biotechnology. The challenge for this paper is to attract investors to do their embryonic stem cell business in the country by providing a framework for the industry’s development. To craft this blueprint, an industry analysis was conducted together with in-depth interviews and expert opinion surveys. Data gathered were analyzed to validate the research hypothesis. New Economy Strategies on Biotechnology was used together with the Competitive Advantage Cycle and Generic Strategies frameworks, in determining the key success factors to attract investors. A TOWS analysis was also done. The recommendations can be divided in two parts: legal aspects and business aspects. The researcher analyzed the dizzying dynamics of biotechnology, the interaction between the many players, the synergies, and what it takes to succeed in the industry to come up with a clear and accessible embryonic stem cell business blueprint for the Philippines.
