Summary: | The purpose of the study was to determine parental influence (paternal and maternal) as the predictor on the subjective well-being, and correlation between parental influence and the subjective well-being among early adolescent children in Metro Manila. The participants of the study were 210 Filipino high school students from Metro Manila. The sample included 93 (44.3%) male students and 117 (55.7%) female students; their ages ranged from 12 to 15 years, and were living with both parents. The data was collected from six standardized instruments, namely: Multidimensional Students’ Life Satisfaction Scale (MSLSS) of Gilman, Huebner, and Laughlin(2000); Social Provisions Scale (SPS) of Cutrona & Russell (1987); Lum Emotional Availability of Parents (LEAP) Scale of Lum and Phares (2005); The Parental Schoolwork Support Measure–Youth (PSSM-Y) of Polo, Zychinski, and Roundfield (2012); Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) of Diener, Emmons, Larsen, and Griffin (1985); and Positive and Negative Affect Scale for Children (PANAS- C) of Laurent, Catanzaro, Joiner, Rudolph, Potter, Lambert, Osborne, and Gathright (1999) which were used to measure the components of parental influence and subjective well-being of the early adolescents. Linear multiple regression was employed in this study. The findings of the study show that parental influence (paternal and maternal in terms of social support, emotional support and academic support) was significantly correlated with one dimension of subjective well-being which was student’s life satisfaction. The variables of paternal and maternal influence (emotional support) were the predictors of one component of subjective well –being (student life satisfaction). The maternal influence (academic support of the mother) was the significant predictor of the component of subjective well –being (positive affect). All the other components of parental influence (paternal and maternal) do not 6 PATERNAL AND MATERNAL INFLUENCE ON SUBJECTIVE WELL-BEING significantly predict the components of subjective well-being. Based on the results of the study, recommendations were made for the benefit of counseling profession, including other research possibilities in the area of subjective well-being. |
