The study aimed to explore students’ conceptual understanding on general chemistry. Specifically, it attempted to determine the level of common conception and existing alternative conceptions or misconceptions of third high school students. A 20- item two tier High School Chemistry Concept Inventory test was used as an instrument. Fifty junior high school students of Pateros National High School are utilized in the study. Written responses and unstructured interviews were done to provide an in depth analysis and interpretation of data gathered. Results revealed that the top 5 common conception among the third year students were conservation of mass, water has higher specific heat compared with alcohol, gasoline is less dense than water, water would remain together as water molecules, and the weight of the water displaced is equal to the weight of the ice. And the top 5 common alternative conceptions of misconceptions are solid is more dense than liquid, incomplete understanding of both representational system used and the concept of limiting reagents, rust make nail lighter, evaporation separate H2O to H2 and O2 , in condensation water is form by the combination of H2 and O2. 2005-04-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_masteral/6781 Master's Theses English Animo Repository Chemistry—Study and teaching (Secondary)—Philippines—Pateros Science and Mathematics Education
