Summary:A study was conducted to probe the misconceptions of students held by a sample of third year high school in chemistry subject of New Era High School (NEHS) in Quezon City. The study would serve as a benchmark for teachers to design innovative teaching strategies to help improve students’ difficulty understanding the concept of chemical solutions and processes. Students’ conceptual understanding was determined through the development and administration of the Chemical Concept Inventory on Solutions. This 16-item inventory is an open-ended format conceptually based type that requires short answers from the students’ own prepositional and conceptual knowledge on chemical solutions. It was found that students held many misconceptions in diverse areas on solutions, such as in the concept of dilution and concentration, and factors affecting solubility of a substance. Students also were in trouble describing instances of phase change of substance and understanding the law of conservation of mass.
