Summary: | Two action research cycles of construction, planning, taking action and evaluation were performed, in the spirit of collaboration and co-inquiry, to improve the company’s payroll process. Squeezed time for processing and approving of payroll, additional manpower for squeezed processing time, and time-consuming payslip printing defined the current state. Interventions included managing employee misperception of change and piloting three process innovations: deferred cut-off, conversion of daily-paid employees to monthly-paid and deployment of payroll software. Relaxed processing and approving of payroll, reduced manpower, and efficient payslip printing defined the desired state. Organizations, management and technology forces contributed to change resistance. Through the methods of action research, a framework was produced for understanding three levels of payroll change: process, system, and culture. |
