The purpose of the study was to explore the relationship of externalizing problem behaviors of individuals autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to adjustment of 66 typically developing adolescent siblings (TDAS). The study also looked into whether perceived sibling relationship quality buffers the association between externalizing problem behaviors of individuals with ASD and adjustment of TDAS. One parent from each family were asked to rate the externalizing problem behaviors of individuals with ASD. On the other hand, TDAS rated their adjustment levels and their perception of sibling relationship quality with individuals with ASD. Data were gathered from different schools and Special Eductaion (SpEd) centers within Metro Manila. Results show that externalizing problem behaviors such as aggression, temper tantrums, destruction of properties, and hyperactivity of individuals with ASD did not necessarily affect adjustment of TDAS. Moreover, it was also shown that most of the TDAS in the study rated themselves as being well adjusted. Externalizing problem behaviors present in individuals with ASD may not be a risk facor for adjustment problems of TDAS. Perceived sibling relationship quality did not buffer the relationship. However, it is a significant factor that may predict better adjustment. 2019-08-01T07:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_masteral/7081 Master's Theses English Animo Repository Autism spectrum disorders Families—Psychological aspects Siblings of people with disabilities Developmental Psychology |
