This study proposes a materials management system for De La Salle Zobel School. The proposed materials management system will be based on the evaluation of the existing materials management system at De La Salle Zobel School as against the application of theories and concepts of an ideal materials management system. The study aims the following questions: 1) What is the present materials management at De La Salle Santiago Zobel School in terms of objectives, organization, functional areas, and procedures? 2) What significant variations does the present Materials Management System of the School have in relation to an ideal Materials Management System with respect to objectives, organization, functional areas, and scope and procedures? 3) What are the explanations for these variations? 4) What recommendations or proposal might be adopted to improve the existing materials management system of the school? The researcher employed the evaluative developmental research method and made use of two major sources of data. One, were the available documents related to the study, and two, were the types of respondent groups. The first group comprised the Director, the Principal, the Controller, Administrative Officer and the Personnel In-charge of the Bookstore and Stockroom. The second group of respondents included 21 department heads who were directly involved in the requisitioning and utilization of materials and supplies for the various aspects of the school. The researcher also made use of the matrix of inventory of purchased items for the school year 1985-1986, and the inventory of materials turnover for the school year 1985-1986. The findings of the study revealed that in terms of objective of the Materials Management System at De La Salle Zobel, 67 percent of the respondents agreed that the objectives of Materials Management System was basically in the efficient use of materials and supplies in order to avoid wastage. In terms of Organization, 83 percent of the respondents agreed that materials management functions must be centralized under the responsibility of the Business Office. In Materials Requirements Planning, as a functional area, the planning team prepared the budget plan for each department on the bases of the previous materials budget plan, budget performance, and the proposed activities with their materials requirement of each unit. In materials control, the key respondents were divided as to whether or not there were control measures actually implemented as provided by the school. On the department heads level, 79 percent specified there were control measures for purposes of internal monitoring of their supplies. In Purchasing, while the key respondents reported that this function was satisfactorily done, 50 percent recommended that more guidelines be provided on the area of control, the screening of materials and supplies be done, bidding be observed, designation of a purchasing personnel, and purchasing procedures be set up. In Stockeeping and Issuance, both the Bookstore and the Stockroom are the main stockeeping and issuance centers for the school's materials and supplies.
