Description
Summary:The study aims to determine the General Physics achievement of the 1984-1985 third year engineering students of Region I and compare their performance with the norm group in terms of Physics content areas and cognitive skill levels. It also aims to determine some personality factors related to Physics achievement. In this study, the descriptive, comparative and correlational methods were used. The strengths and weaknesses of the third year engineering students of Region I were determined through the difficulty indices of the items of the Physics achievement test. The degrees of relationship between personality factor variables and Physics achievement were also measured. The Physics Achievement Test for Science and Engineering Students developed by the Philippine Science and Mathematics Council (PSMC) was used in this study. The personality test, Bell Adjustment Inventory, was administered to the students after the Physics achievement test. The test measured the following: home adjustment, health adjustment, submissiveness, emotionality and sexuality. However, only the home adjustment and health adjustment were adopted in this study. The subjects for the research were the third year engineering students of the school year 1984-1985 from six(6) selected colleges and universities in Northern Luzon. These samples were students who have either finished or were currently taking the last course of General Physics at the time the study was conducted. They were categorized as follows: Agricultural Engineering (AE), Chemical Engineering (ChE), Civil Engineering (CE), Electrical Engineering (EE) and Mechanical Engineering (ME) students. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that the 1984-1985 third year engineering students of Region I were considered relatively weak in Physics. However, their Physics achievement showed that they surpassed the achievement level of the 1982-1983 engineering norm group. Also, there were evidences found to show that good home adjustment enhances Physics achievement. The personality factor Q1 (Conservative vs. Experimenting) influenced the Physics achievement of the students. However, there were no conclusive evidences that showed the relationship between Physics achievement and the other personality factors.
