Summary: | v. 1. This is a proposal of a family life information service for the Christ the King parishioners in Chakradharpur, Bihar, India. The program is limited to the HO villagers constituting 70 percent of the parishioners. The program is also restricted to one service of the guidance program, the information service. Through interviews and observations of his parishioners, the writer found out the common problems of the villagers which centered around these areas : (1) husband-wife relationship, (2) parent-child relationship, (3) sex education of their children, and (4) preparation for married life. The writer proposed to meet these problems with the help of his limited personnel through the guidance information service. Lectures and instructions by the writer himself and by specialists, discussions, debates, role-playing are some of the methods he proposed to disseminate information regarding some areas of family living. Evaluation of the program will be done through scheduled monthly interviews with head catechists and interviews with the villagers themselves. Records, reports, and attendance are some of the means and instruments to add to the information. The writer feels that the information service of the parish Family Life Program is a good start towards the initial solution of the many problems of the villagers.
v. 2. This study seeks to find out the predictive validity of the entrance tests administered to the high school freshmen applicants of St. Scholastica's College. The subjects of this study were 127 freshmen students (1970-1971) of St. Scholastica's College, Manila. The instruments used were the Stanford Achievement Test : 1976 edition (SAT) and the Otis-Lennon Mental Ability Test, intermediate level, form J (OLMAT). The predictive validity of the entrance tests (SAT and OLMAT) were determined, in relation to the students general point averages (GPA), by employing simple correlation, multiple correlation, partial regression coefficients, and multiple regression equation. Based on the findings of this study, it was concluded that the SAT and GPA have a positive substantial correlation significant at the .01 level. The IQ scores did not correlate significantly with the criterion. It was thus evident that the SAT was the better predictor of academic performance. However, the IQ could also be a good predictor of scholastic performance but only in combination with the SAT. It was recommended that the SAT should remain as a basis for the school's selective admission. The school could continue using the IQ also for the selective admission, but only together with the SAT. It was suggested that a study on the reasons for the weak predictive validity of the IQ scores be undertaken. Also, the effectiveness of the screening instruments of the school should be continuously evaluated. Other screening instruments should likewise be tried out since only 44.83 percent of the variance in the GPA was accounted for by whatever was measured by the IQ and SAT together.
v. 3.This study is an application of the counselor's guidance and counseling ability and knowledge. The counselor records and interprets data about his counselee in a systematic way, thereby providing him a basis for evaluating the effectiveness of his counseling. The counselee is Edna, who was seven months old on the family way. The counselor performed his counseling task and also enlightened the counselee on the problem of giving her baby away for legal adoption in order to facilitate her return to normal social life, and in order to give her baby a name and a home. In dealing with his counselee, the writer made use of the Rational-Emotive Theory (RET) of Albert Ellis (1962) and on Patterson's principles of counseling. To supplement the interviews, psychological testing was made use of. The Diagnostic Center at the maternity clinic gave the counselee the following tests : Otis Self-Administering Test of Mental Ability, the Ravens Matrices, the Draw-a-Person Test, the Sacks Completion Test, and the Thematic Apperception Test. The counselee administered the WAIS after the counselee was discharged from the maternity clinic. The case study concluded that it helped the writer evaluate himself with respect to the behavioral objectives of the MS Guidance and Counseling course, made him aware of his potentialities as a counselor, and also revealed his shortcomings and limitations. The following deficiencies that call for improvement came to the fore : 1. The writer tends to interrupt the counselee at inappropriate times 2. Lack of emphatic understanding of counselee to some degree 3. Insufficient knowledge of Ellis' rational-emotive therapy. With regard to the counselee, she would need an off-and-on assistance from a counselor. |
