Description
Summary:This study proposes a guidance program for the high school department of the Divine Word University of Tacloban. A descriptive survey was conducted on the total student population (1,030) , the principal, and all the teachers (32) of the high school department in the schoolyear 1973-74. The analysis and discussion of survey results were however based on the instruments returned (63 percent of the student population and 53 percent of the teachers). To survey student problems, a checklist patterned from the Mooney Problem Checklist was designed by the researcher. A questionnaire was also made for the teachers to determine their readiness for guidance work. The most prevalent student problem areas were : socio-psychological relations, adjustment to school work, personal-psychological, health and physical development, and finances and living conditions. The following services were included in the proposed guidance program : testing, individual and group counseling, vocational guidance and counseling, and placement. Also, to measure the effectiveness of the guidance program, follow-up, evaluation, and research were included in the proposed program. Majority of the teacher-respondents (65 percent) saw the need for the guidance program. It was concluded that an organized and functional guidance program could facilitate the achievement of academic goals. The proposals made should be subject to modifications according to the current needs of the students and teachers, and the conditions in the local and school community during the implementation stage.
